Throwback to when we shot the stills and video campaign for Virgin Atlantic’s A339 Neo airline. We worked over four days at Virgin Atlantic’s hangar at Heathrow Airport. Lots of planning and hard work went into making this a streamlined lifestyle airline shoot. Shooting planes can be a tricky task. Although a plane itself is huge, inside you are confined to very small spaces to work with. One of our tasks was to make sure we showcased Virgin Atlantic’s interior lighting design, which features a lot of pinks, purples, and lavenders. When you have a powerful source of light coming from outside, it tends to cancel out the interior lighting. In most cases, this is usually fine, but we didn’t want to do that.
We had a mix of T12 and 18k as our key sunlight rigged up on cherry pickers. For the interior, we used a mix of Aputures, Dedos, and other lighting, including some Astera LEDs, which we could dial in to different colour temperatures to match the plane’s lighting. So, it’s a bit of a juggling act to find the sweet spot to create something that looks real and authentic. However, these challenges also make the shoot incredibly rewarding. If you’ve shot on a plane before, you’ll fully understand the delicate balancing act involved, and the massive accomplishment at the end of a shoot.
